Maintaining Your Upholstered Furniture Items

Wear and tear to the upholstery on your furniture can be a common source of deterioration that can impact the comfort and appearance of your home's furniture. Unfortunately, individuals can overlook several of the steps that will play an important role in helping them to keep their upholstered furniture in good condition.

Keep The Upholstery Vacuumed And Shampooed

Cleaning the upholstery on a regular basis is one of the steps that you can take that will have the biggest impact on the overall condition of the upholstery. At a minimum, the upholstery should be regularly vacuumed and periodically shampooed. These simple steps will be able to remove the dirt, dust, and hair that could start to accumulate in the upholstery over the years of use that it experiences. After shampooing or steam cleaning the upholstery, it should be left in a well-ventilated area so that it can dry as quickly as possible. This will reduce the time the furniture will need before it can be used as well as limit the chance of mildew starting to form on the fabric.

Patch Any Rips or Punctures In The Upholstery

At some point during the time that you own your furniture, the upholstery could be vulnerable to developing rips or punctures in it. These damages may be fairly isolated when they first develop, but the stress the upholstery will experience when the furniture is being used can cause the openings to rapidly increase in size. Eventually, stuffing from the upholstery may start to fall out through this hole. Patching rips and punctures in the upholstery is a simple repair that you can do on your own in most cases with little effort. However, you will need to keep a needle and various colors of threading available. Having a wide range of colors of threading available will make it easier for you to match the thread for the patch to the rest of the upholstery.

Have The Furniture Professionally Reupholstered When It Becomes Severely Worn

Eventually, the upholstery for your furniture items will become worn and stained to the point where it may no longer be repairable. In these situations, you can still salvage the furniture items by hiring an upholstery service. These professionals can reupholster your furniture to restore it to its original appearance or to even update the color and design of the furniture. Unfortunately, homeowners will often greatly overestimate the costs and time involved with reupholstering their furniture items, and this can cause them to overlook this solution.
